ABOUT WILLIS TX

Willis is a city in Montgomery County, Texas, United States, located eight miles north of Conroe in north-central Montgomery County. The city began to develop in the 1870s after what is now a Union Pacific Railroad was built in the area. As part of the Piney Woods, The Willis economy has historically been driven by lumber, agriculture, and the production of lumber and farm equipment.

Prior to the founding of Willis, most of the area residents lived in a settlement known as Danville, formed four miles west of present-day New Waverly in the 1830s. Some Danville residents in 1850 settled south of Danville there. who is Willis today. Many of these early Danville residents owned large slave plantations. About 600 of Danville's estimated 1,000 residents in the 1850s were slaves. After the Civil War, many newly freed slaves lived in the Willis area, founding Thomas Chapel United Methodist Church in 1867, Willis' oldest church.
